2015 mini dance rant! Dance studio instructors; Please teach your students HOW to DANCE. Competitive dance studio choreographers; PUT DANCING IN TO YOUR CHOREOGRAPHY. Dance has evolved so much, and young dancers are doing some amazingly impressive tricks these days. But if they cant DANCE (move rhythmically to music) then they are just doing tricks similar to those you may find in the gymnastics world. That is not dancing and you have not done them justice as their instructor or choreographer. If you can only teach and combine those types of skills, then you should be working in a gym and not choreographing for dancers. Dance is art; the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. There is so much emphasis being put in to these wow factor tricks that there is no artistry being taught or developed in your dancers. Ultimately you are not realistically preparing your students for a professional career in dance with out teaching them about the art. Parents and students take note. There has to be a balance. There has to be something more than tricks that the audience can make an emotional connection to. Make sure your children are getting ALL the necessary tools to be successful.
