21 SEPT. 1745: JACOBITE VICTORY AT PRESTON PANS, SCOTLAND Preston Pans, the first battle in the Scottish uprising of 1745-1746, was a resounding success for the Jacobites supporting the deposed Stuart dynasty. After a night march, at first light they outflanked the Hanoverian government’s largely inexperienced troops, and in ten minutes routed the enemy. Sir John Cope, the Hanoverian commander, had no option but to flee. His subsequent court martial concluded - and modern research confirms - that Cope was a competent commander who had done all that was possible to do. Still, the fact that he brought the news of his own defeat has been chortled over ever since in the Scottish folk song, “Hey, Johnnie Cope.”
