21 years ago to the minute, my sister Alexia came into the world a screaming bundle. I was three at the time, and didnt really have an idea of what it meant to be an older brother with a little sister. I have a hazy memory of my mother on the couch in the apartment where we grew up in Jackson Heights. She was pregnant and told me that soon Id have a little sister. As time pased, my sister learned how to walk and she learned how to talk, and as I grew up she grew up. I had my firstborn blunders, and from me, she learned how to not get grounded. She was a constant ally throughout our childhood together, and it was a hell of a day when we dropped her off at college. At 21, shes pursuing her Masters in Public Health at SUNY Downstate. Shes fiercely independent with a strong sense of self and a sharp wit. She possesses an unflagging ability to call me on my shit, particularly if I forget to flush. Shes a true comrade in arms, and has shown me how to be a better person. I couldnt have asked for a better sister. Todays your day, kiddo. Happy birthday.
