23 January 2015 Current Affairs Saudi Arabia King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Died Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who spent almost a decade on the throne of the world’s largest oil exporter, died on 23 January. He was 90. After the death of Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, his brother and Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was named as the new king. The new crown prince is Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Both Salman and Muqrin are younger brothers of Abdullah. Abdullah was born in Riyadh in 1924 and was one among the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia’s founder, King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. Abdullah was selected as crown prince in 1982 on the day his half-brother Fahd ascended the throne. He became de facto ruler in 1995 when a stroke incapacitated Fahd.Abdullah ascended to the throne as King in 2005. Abdullah’s biggest priority was to confront Iran, the Shiite powerhouse across the Gulf. Jhumpa Lahiri Won DSC Prize for South Asian Literature Indian American writer Jhumpa Lahiri has won the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature that was announced at the Jaipur Literature Festival.Lahiri, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, received the prestigious $50,000 award for her book “The Lowland,” set in both New England and the eastern state of West Bengal during the late 1960s when the Naxalite movement, a separatist uprising, began.Lahiri’s publisher accepted the prize on her behalf because the author is currently in Rome. “The Lowland” was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize for fiction in 2013 but did not win. Her book “Interpreter of Maladies” won the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2000. SBI signed 100 million euro Loan Agreement European Bank State Bank of India (SBI) has signed a loan agreement for 100 million euro (about Rs 700 crore) with European INVESTMENT Bank for lending to private businesses in the country. This is the third tranche of a total sanctioned loan of 200 million euro by EIB.The European Investment Bank (EIB) is the European Union’s nonprofit long-term lending institution.
