24 cops hurt in Bagdogra violence while people protested for the alleged murder of Ganesh in police lockup in Azamgarh, UP. His body was creamated on Wednesday @ Bagdogra; mother was not even allowed to she her son for the last time. At least 24 police personnel were injured, two buses were torched, and five persons, including a civic policeman, were arrested as local people and relatives blocked National Highway 31 for seven long hours at Bagdogra near Siliguri protested his death. Police lobbed teargas shells and rained batons on the protesters to bring the situation under control. Late Ganesh sister Rita said the blockade was staged to press for demands that her father and brother be released immediately from the correctional home in Uttar Pradesh. We are apprehending that the same thing can happen with them, and we are demanding the administration here to take initiatives to release them, Rita said. But we were not involved in any kind of violence last night. Some of us were in fact injured when stones hit us. The police here forcibly took the body from us and we do not know what they did with it, she added. Siliguri additional deputy commissioner of police, Bhola Nath Pandey, said if the family members wanted to say anything to the police here over the incident, they should approach police.
