25 Husbands are told to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Maybe men tend to become bullies because most can bench-press more. But men, if you want to promote a godly family, the key is to love your wives. What is more, men must love their wives as Christ loved the church. Let’s see how Christ loved the church in the next verse. 26 When Jesus died for us, He rendered us venerable!! Wow!! This is true, according to the Greek. Husbands, do the same for your wives! By the way, this truth crushes legalism, for Jesus hallowed us on the cross, we do not hallow ourselves with works! Jesus cleansed us from spiritual stains when He suffered in our place. We were spiritual lepers and Jesus made us clean! Husbands, if you love your wives and children, you will also clean the family, for love covers a multitude of sins. This next part is another bible phrase that has been stolen and legalized by works-Christians. The washing of water by the word is not bible study. If you look at the Greek, the word which Paul refers to is a spoken word, or anything uttered by the human voice. Paul did not speak the bible to the Ephesians, for the bible in its present form did not even exist yet. The word Paul spoke was the gospel sentence which says that Jesus died for our sins and rose again on the third day. When someone believes this good news, they are washed of soul. Jesus washes our souls by His cross when we believe this gospel. This is the greatest love. Husbands, love your wives with the spoken word too. Speak gently and lovingly to them. This is the underlying truth that Paul is alluding to and that legalists cannot understand. How do we save our marriages? Think how Jesus saved our souls. And if it’s too late for your marriage, do not worry. It’s never too late for your soul. 27
