28 January Yesterdays story, Part 2 The captain of the Prinz Eitel Friedrich, angry at the slow pace of jettisoning the cargo, orders the crew of William P Frye to leave the ship, which he then sinks with explosive charges. There is outrage in the USA. This is the first occasion on which US interests have directly been harmed by war activity. Several well-known artists paint memorial pictures of the William P Frye, today’s first picture is one such by Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen, a Danish-born artist living in New York and known as ‘The Audubon of steam vessels’. He painted over 6,000 of them in his career, and they were popular among the marine community for their accuracy and sympathy. Later, in a bizarre twist, the Prinz Eitel Friedrich was interned by the US government in 1917 and re-emerged as the US troop-ship USS DeKAlb. The second picture is of USS DeKalb. After the sinking of the William P Frye, the US government lodged a claim for damages against the German government and the American Journal of International Law printed a copy of the instruction to the US Ambassador in Germany.
