28TH MARCH 2014 THE CHRISTIAN DOES NOT NEED A DOUBLE PORTION ANOINTING That there are so many Christians who are praying to God day in and day out; asking God for “ a double portion anointing”. If you have been around in Christ for quite a while now, then, I believe you might have come across such Christians before. All such prayers are the clear manifestation of their gross ignorance and inadequate understanding of God’s Word. There is no place in the Bible that tells the Christian to pray for a double portion anointing. To the Christian, the Word says; “And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” John 1:16 and “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” John 3:34 If we have received of His fullness; then, why ask for portions? If God has not given us the Holy Spirit by measure; then, why do you ask for portions? The next important question to ask with regard to this so-called double portion anointing is; DOUBLE PORTION OF WHAT OR WHOSE ANOINTING ARE YOU ASKING FOR? We have already received of His fullness, remember! I know you asking, “what about Elijah and Elisha”? Where Elisha asked for a double portion anointing; “And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.” 2Kings 2:9 Alright, we will look at what why Elisha asked for a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. But let us look first into the Law of Moses and find out what the LAW OF DOUBLE PORTION actually says. “If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.” Deut. 21:15-17 The meaning of double portion in the Scripture above is that, assuming a man has 12 sons; if that man dies; his possessions ought to be divided into 13 portions. Then, 11 of his sons will take a single portion each: but, his first born son will take the remaining two portions as a seal or sign of seniority over the other sons. That was to distinguish the first born son from the younger ones. This was the same understanding Elisha had when he asked for a double portion spirit from Elijah; remember Elisha was under the Law and understood this law. Elijah also had a number of young prophets with him to which Elisha belonged. These were called THE SONS OF THE PROPHETS. Just as it was in the Law of Moses, for Elisha to be the LEAD PROPHET after Elijah and be superior over the other sons of the prophet; he had to have a double portion of what all the other sons of the prophet had, and that is why he asked for the double portion. But we who are in Christ do not need portions of the Spirit, be it double or single, because the Bible says; “And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.” John 1:16 and “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” John 3:34
