29 AUGUST 2013 SPAR BABY PROTEAS TO CONTEND FOR 5TH PLACE AT WORLD YOUTH CHAMPS Glasgow, Scotland – In one of the more predictable matches of the World Youth Netball Championships, the SPAR Baby Proteas beat Barbados 59-20 to move into the 5th place playoff. Unlike the last two teams that South Africa has come up against, Barbados started off slowly, giving the SPAR Baby Proteas ample opportunities to intercept and score off their centres. South African goal attack Lisa-Marie Wiese was quick on her feet, making a number of such intercepts, and goal keeper Zandre Kruger had a great game. South Africa led by 17 goals to 4 by the end of the first quarter. The SPAR Baby Proteas picked up the pace slightly in the second quarter as they played well as a team. They maintained majority possession of the ball, turning over a number of the Barbados plays once again, and ending at half time with 35 goals to 10. Barbados continued to give the South Africans room to play in, which allowed them to widen the gap even more in the third quarter, scoring a further 13 goals to Barbados’ 4. The last quarter was no different, as the SPAR Baby Proteas maintained their lead in an easy win. “The girls came back well, and had an excellent match” said South African coach Dorette Badenhorst in a post-match interview. “The shots went in, the defence was brilliant. The SPAR Baby Proteas are back!” On court two, a hotly competitive match ensued between Wales and Trinidad and Tobago, which would pin one of them up against South Africa on Saturday. After a very tight game, Wales just managed to sneak ahead, taking the game by 61 goals to 54. Looking ahead of the match, coach Badenhorst said; “Wales is a very good team, who are physically strong. We need to be at our best, and will try our best to take fifth place.” The SPAR Baby Proteas will take on Wales on Saturday 31 August at 12h30 Glasgow time.
