2x2 Weaves, Day 1: Taught two out of three dogs how to stick - TopicsExpress

2x2 Weaves, Day 1: Taught two out of three dogs how to stick their head through the poles, freeze dead while staring at cheese on ground, and then (upon encouragement) back out of the poles, run around pole b (carefully avoiding the space between the poles) and eat the cheese. Pretty cool, yes? I doubt very many people could teach two dogs such a thing in ten minutes. Third dog - bless his heart - performed just like in the pictures. What I learned is that 1) reinforce too fast in an effort to prevent the dog from looking at handler and you will teach circling the outside of the pole, or 2) reinforce too slow and subject dog will stop and watch for the cheese toss - staring from between the poles or 3) time it just right and hit subject dog in the head with the cheese - leading to cheese tangled in ear hair which has to be removed, making subject dogs leery of the entire process. To say that loses the flow of the session would be an understatement. Cheese is currently on my hit list. Let me just say that this training article would be much improved if it would address these three issues and provide adequate solutions. Switched to a toy outdoors - much better. Will report on next lesson when we get there.
