3/5 - Kill Your Darlings Director: John Krokidas (2013) There - TopicsExpress

3/5 - Kill Your Darlings Director: John Krokidas (2013) There are some great movies out on Redbox this week, from American Hustle to Frozen. However, if you have already seen those two in theaters, then you have two other films - of slightly less quality - to choose from: the Mandela biofilm and this poetic crime thriller, Kill Your Darlings. Out of those two, this is probably the one you are least likely to have heard of; hence, my reason for reviewing it. Kill Your Darlings is based around a murder that brought together the big names of the Beat generation, two in particular. Those two are Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe) and Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan). All I will say is one of them does something very illegal. Other than that, the film is a brief picture of the Big Bang of Beat poetry. I could never really tell if KYD was a drama, a biopic, or a thriller. It definitely could have been all of those things - just check out yesterdays Hanna review -, but first-time director John Krokidas does not really juggle all of the elements efficiently. What does Krokidas have going for him? That would be his actors. Dane DeHaan is great as usual, but Daniel Radcliffe has all of the spotlight in this one. Sporting a great American accent - a bit better than his old pal Emma Watsons in The Bling Ring -, Radcliffe plays Ginsberg for everything the role is worth. If anything, the movie only serves as a tease. After it was over, all I wanted was an extended film or a show about the poet. I can not wait to see where Radcliffe goes with his career. Krokidas? Well, maybe he will do better next time.
