€3.90 album pick @ firebox.fi/store Grief of Emerald - The Devils Deep CD reverbnation/griefofemerald Grief of Emerald, the Swedish Black Death metal band, that released 3 albums with a melodic combination of black and death metal, showed quality music and raised some attention in the past. After the superb and well received last album “Christian Termination” in 2002 and a matching European tour, Grief of Emerald sank deep down, because of personnel problems and not being able to find new partners in crime. All these years the devil was slumbering and waiting at the deep. Finally! After almost ten years Grief of Emerald returns fully equipped to the surface with their new album “The Devil’s Deep”. After their first new tunes during 2009, released as a demo called “Holocaust”, now these songs are re-recorded and available on the new album along with another new track “Divine Dragon” and 3 more re-written and re-recorded songs of their first albums. The quality that was set by their last 2002 release “Christian Termination” has continued on the new album. Death metal songs in the best Morbid Angel tradition Mixed with influences like Dark Funeral among others that are displaying stable and solid structures to which the diverse black metal influences are added; such as Johnny Letho’s impressive voice from deep grunts to high screams, and even clean vocals on the song “Divine Dragon”. Alongside many keyboard influences ranging from Dimmu Borgir’s to Old Man’s Child’s best periods and the recognizable and simple, (the use of “old fashioned” strings is part in this), but very effective blackened metal atmospheres. The 6 strings guitars have been change into 7 strings guitars, what gives the music an extra dimension. And in combination with a steady bass guitar the sound gets a wide range from high to low. The drummer is one of the best drummers I’ve heard the last years, from blast beats to full speed fills everything goes very smooth. This album was recorded at the Fullmoon Studios and given a very well and clear pressing sound by Stefan Karlsson. All these facts make this fourth official album by Grief of Emerald one of their best so far. Grief of Emerald is the perfect substitute for all the Dimmu Borgir and Old Man’s Child fans, which lost their attention and dedication already for years, while these bands became to mainstream and poppy. Check out Grief of Emerald and support them! The negative people can say, “hey there are some songs of the previous albums, couldn’t they write more songs?” fact is...the band was on hold for almost 9 years, they just started wirting songs not long before they recorded the album, and they did rerecorded 3 old song with their new sound and musicians. In my opinion this is a good start to let the world know they still exist, and give the world a taste of what will come and how the new songs will sound.
