According to the organizers of the awards – the Ghana Property Awards and Ghana Institute of Housing (GIH), the coveted awards will confer red on the three former leaders at the upcoming 6th Ghana Property Awards to be held on 26th October, 2013, at the Banquet Hall, State House, in Accra. The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Property Awards, Robert Wegbe, explained to the Business Chronicle the rationale of awarding the three former presidents, when there are huge infrastructural challenges confronting the country. He stated: “The three past presidents have contributed greatly to the infrastructural development of the country. This has today made it possible for developers and contractors to access and build on”. Mr. Wegbe was quick to add that during the tenure of the past leaders, Ghana experienced many infrastructural developments, particularly roads across the length and breadth of the West African country. Some players in the housing industry, according to him (Mr. Wegbe), would be competing for award categories, including the Developer of the Year 2013-Lower Housing, Middle Income and Upper Market; Innovation of the Year 2013 and Infrastructure of the Year 2013. To this end, he disclosed that “we have set up a technical committee to select applicants who submitted their works for the awards”. Throwing more light on the awards night, which is expected to draw down the curtains on the upcoming Housing Excellence Conference from the 24th to 26th October, this year, at the International Conference Centre, Accra, the Head of Ghana Institute of Housing, Ms Helen Ankrah told journalists at a press briefing that the event would diagnose and offer solutions to the challenges hindering the housing industry. She said the over 250 participants who were expected to attend the conference would also discus the National Housing Policy, as the government looks to reviewing it in the course of this year. The conference and the awards night, being organized by the Ghana Property Awards and Ghana Institute of Housing (GIH), in collaboration with the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), the government, Property Express and Consult ASH, include visits to construction sites at Prampram and Budumburum, both in the Greater Accra and Central regions respectively. Ms Ankrah, therefore, used the occasion to appeal to the panoply of the housing experts and the general public to participate in the upcoming event. The Deputy Director of Housing at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works, and Housing, Madam Theresa Tufuor noted that the ministry was in the process of reviewing the National Housing Policy, so as to make it more relevant to the current needs of the Ghanaian society. She indicated that in a bid to address the 1.7 million housing deficit, the government is calling on GREDA, GIH and other housing institutions for a partnership. on the Managing Director of the State Housing Corporation, Dr. Mark Nii Akwei was happy to say: “Our country is on the verge of major economic breakthrough,” citing the burgeoning oil and gas industry, which increases the demand for residential and office accommodations in Accra and other parts of Ghana. He, however, asked the GIH as a matter of urgency to provide leadership in the country’s housing industry equipping Ghanaians with the needed knowledge of housing.
