This is an open call for art that emphasizes and/or uses negative space in creative ways. Subject matter can include conceptually absent objects, the great beyond, portraits, landscapes, as long as it connects to space or lack thereof. Please challenge the ideas of space and the concepts surrounding it. Should negative be viewed as negative? Can it be full? or is it genuinely the absence of anything? We would love work that makes us pause and question the identity of space. The Impossible The impossible cannot occur. It cannot exist or be unless you do it. From Leonardo Da Vinci to Quentin Tarantino to MC Escher, artists have always been depicting the impossible. This exhibition aims to echo the subjects of these artists and create a space filled with the realization of the impossible. The tone of the exhibition is meant to range from lighthearted to profound, from six impossible things before breakfast to works that probe the edges of realistic structures, landscapes, or figures. Subject matter can include, but is not limited to: complex math, alternative history, physics, fantasy, trompe-loeil, alternative landscapes, human forms, or tongue-in-cheek artwork. How have you taken the familiar and made it fresh and beautiful and strange and haunting? or new just completely unrecognizable? Those little things They can be found under beds, stuffed in drawers, displayed on shelves, crammed in boxes or hidden around the house. They are waiting to be taken out and remembered from time to time, reminiscent of past memories. Trinkets are objects too precious to throw away, yet often forgotten. Everyone has trinkets taking up space, both physically and emotionally. Why are we drawn to objects whose value and meaning is unknown until rediscovered? What makes them appealing? This exhibition will explore the relationship between the past and the continuous existence of those moments through these trinkets. We welcome artists to submit works which delve into their drawer of memories. About the Young Curators Program & Exhibition The Montclair Art Museums Young Curators program is an intensive 7 month excursion into the business of curating for high school juniors and seniors. Through museum and studio visits coordinated by independent curator Asha Ganpat, the Young Curators discover their own voices and bring art together using audio tours, programs, and gallery exhibitions. The group has been divided into three curatorial teams and each has developed an exhibition theme and will be selecting artists for their exhibitions through an open call, which will be on view at the Pierro Art Gallery in South Orange, NJ. -- ashaganpat
