3 a.m. got that call every parent worries about... Daughter driving 1000 miles back to school alone after the holidays and encounters a rock slide in the road, gets blowout in a remote mountainous area with no cell reception and no jack or tire iron. Luckily she made it down the road 2 miles and found a pay phone that only makes collect calls. Phone rings--to accept collect calls press 1. I press 1. This phone does not accept collect calls please enter a credit card number at the tone. Beep...Clamoring for my credit cards, glasses and a light I accept the call only to hear the words-- Mom I am somewhere near Rt 20 and the 16 outside Sacramento in the mountains with a blow out. Click ...gone. Second call-same deal--but I am ready this time- clamoring I get the card info in and I yell back... well get you help stay put... click again. By now the two Keiths are up and we try to figure it out. I call our roadside assistance. We spend 10 long minutes trying to figure out where she could be, Keith Sr still trying to wake up, Keith jr manning the computer google maps.....bamm....we get a rough latitude and longitude and give it to the roadside assistance lady. She still struggling to arrange the truck to find her. Then a brain storm= call 911 !! ....send a CHP looking for her. Voila! Done CHP in the area had a good idea where she is because there are not too many payphones in that area. She is found! First by a CALTRANS worker, who calls CHP. Because CHP is already in route from our call he arrives in 15 minutes. CHP changes her tire--putting a mini spare on and off she went into the rainy night for another 300 mile trip back to school. We get a call from her about 30 minutes later where she had cell service. By now it is after 4 a.m. I decided that she must not go further on a mini spare in the rain. We find a decent Inn in Willits CA about 80 miles away. She arrives by 5 a.m. we both go to sleep. 8 a.m. call from Chase Bank..fraud alert...wanting to know if the two collect calls for $20 a minute were authorized?
