(31)...I passed in second division and went to high school. The school was far,situated fifteen miles away from home. I leave home at five oclock running my way to school to escape being caught late.Latecoming was severely punished. I remember the day Otuoma was made to dig out a termite queen. It was a very big antihill.One of the askaris was put to watch and to guarantee his station there. He set about it at nine oclock only to complete at a quarter to one p.m. The poor boy worked on an empty stomach. The next day a special parade was called and he asked to produce the queen.He did. He never came late again. Nobody until my sixth level ever came late. My uniform was a pair of a khaki short and a white shirt which l used throughout my ordinary level. I had no shoes for my feet but as the rules dictate l tucked in my shirt and walked on those bare feet. l think l was smart. Joining high was a happy welcome by the bullies. The old boys.
