35 Years Ago Today: November 10, 1979 11:53pm EST: A 106-car Canadian Pacific freight train derailed in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, a large suburb west of Toronto. Several cars containing styrene, toluene, lye, chlorine, and propane ruptured spilling their contents. The propane exploded creating a mile high fireball that could be seen 62 miles away. Chlorine gas was rapidly spreading which led to the largest peacetime evacuation in North American history (until Hurricane Katrina, 2005). Of the 284,000 Mississauga residents, 218,000 were evacuated and didnt return home until November 16 after the fire burned itself out and the chlorine threat had subsided. Incredibly, no one was killed or seriously hurt in the incident.
