351 HEADMEN AWAIT ABSORPTION INTO SCHEME The number of headmen of arbitration countrywide awaiting absorption into the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development’s allowance scheme is 351. The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, the Honourable Botlogile Tshireletso, noted that since the introduction of the allowance in 2001 to date, the ministry had a total of 1982 headmen of arbitration on the waiting list. She said out of this number, 1 631 were now being paid, leaving a difference of 351 as unpaid. “The total annual cost for paying these headmen would be P11953 656. However, under the circumstances I am unable to create new posts to absorb them because the budget does not allow me to do so,” she said. Assistant Minister Tshireletso said when the economic situation improved, her ministry would gradually consider creating new posts in order to absorb the remaining 351 on an annual basis. Palapye MP, the Honourable Moiseraele Goya, had wanted the minister to state the number of headmen of arbitration countrywide who were awaiting absorption into the ministry’s allowance scheme, and the number the ministry would be able to absorb each year and when they would be absorbed. He also wanted to know the number of those that have been in the waiting list from the date the allowance scheme was introduced to date, and the future plans regarding the scheme, if any. (BOPA)
