#374 Heres a secret about BYUs institute. Toward the end a semester a few years ago, I had twins that died at birth. It was devastating. A few weeks later, my father died of a heart attack. My mother, having broken down completely, left the funeral arrangements to me, which was extremely difficult. I was a good student, but I really needed some time off. I wasnt asking for a handout, but I hoped my professors would help me out and give me some extra time to complete my assignments. They were very nice. Some even told me not to worry about the final. However, out of my five classes, all of the teachers were sympathetic except for one - my institute teacher. I didnt really expect accommodations in college, but I thought it ironic that out of all the people that should care most, the licensed disciple of God didnt. Instead, this teacher actually recorded his lectures (on tape, no less) of him spending most of the hour talking about how many words he knew in Hebrew and Greek and how that made him a better bible scholar then the other institute teachers. I had to listen to these tapes, respond to them in writing, then take the final, whose arbitrary answers had nothing to do with my faith-based living. I got a C in that class - the lowest grade Ive ever received in college, which led to the lowest GPA Ive ever had. Funny thing is, this particular institute teacher now has a new book about the mercy of Christ.
