This was the Operation Theatre of the 56 Command Military Hospital during the World War 2.The Hospital was started in 1943, in a makeshift manner, on the entire Barbari race course area (109 acres) of Dibrugarh, which was used by British Tea Planters of that time for horse racing, and situated at about 4 kms from Dibrugarh town. The land was allotted by the then Deputy Commissioner of undivided North Lakimpur District Mr.C.S. Gunning, in response to an appeal made by Major General Joseph Warren Stillwell. It was used to treat war casualties of the famous North Burma Expedition of Allied Forces. In due course of time, the makeshift structure was improved upon by bringing the infrastructure & equipment of 26 IGCH Hospital of New York, at the initiation of Major General Joseph Warren Stillwell. At the end of the World War 2 in 1946, the Base hospital, including the instruments and other medical facilities, was handed over to the Government of Assam Province of British India, at a cost of Rs. 4,04,000.00. Major J.R. Kerr, IMS, who was at that time the Superintendent of Berry White Medical School, took over the charge of the premises on behalf of IGCH( Inspector General of Civil Hospitals), Assam. 2. After the establishment of Assam Medical College in the premises of the abandoned 56 Command Military Hospital, this Operation Theatre came under the Department of Surgery. Since its inception, this Operation Theatre has been a living history and shining example of the growth of Surgery and Anesthesiology during the time of war and also subsequently, in this premier Institute of Assam Medical College. With the establishment of new Surgical Units with more Operation Theatres during the subsequent growth of Assam Medical College, this was probably named as OT 1. 3. When the Department of Surgery was shifted to its new building, the prestigious OT 1 became the hub of another emerging discipline,i.e.,the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, from 2007 till the year 2010. 4. Today, it stands alone, as the only existing monument of the 56 Command Military Hospital, reminding one about its glorious history and readiness to carry forward the legacy of untiring and illustrious growth of Medical science across Assam Medical College with every passing year of the millennium. 5. We have taken up a humble effort to restore the OT 1 as a heritage structure to remind us the glorious past associated with it. We further believe that it will help Alumni of this Institute to revive the nostalgic moments of their association with this Operation theatre during their days in the Institute. 3rd November’2014 Prof. Atindra Kr.Adhikari Principal Cum Chief Superintendent Assam Medical College& Hospital Dibrugarh 3. dedicating the 200 bedded New Girls Hostel in the name of Dr. Sarita Toshniwal It will be of great help if some one is having the information in the form of write up, photos and other documents regarding Berrywhite Medical School and Assam Medical College during its formative years. We are planning to start an ARCHIVE.
