3rd X1 away to Longford As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death we take not a look at ourselves but a search for lost balls. This theme was to dog the Phoenix bowling attack on a ground that can only be described as a field with a mat and no toilets, not even a squat bog. Phoenix were asked to bowl first and when A Joseph took a couple early on with the help of another from G Miller Longford were soon reduced to 9/3. A Sarfraz and H Rasheed set about resurrecting the innings with strokes that would have made Mark Waugh proud. On drives, late cuts and deft touches were the order of the day and by that I mean, dirty mows across the line that put on 99 for the 4th wicket. I Anders was brought on to bowl and with a couple of near misses A Sarfraz finally held out to a Joseph catch in the deep. Joseph had not be seen and was presumed dead until he appeared from the long grass in cow corner much to the surprise of many who thought it was going to the boundary. Longford chipped around and continued to hit big to scratch out 203 A/0. A Joseph 30/3, B Ovendon 29/2, I Anders 30/2. A Sarfraz 68 and H Rasheed 53. Phoenix lost N Shazad early in the run chase but S Shah and Ovenden weathered some decent bowling from Longford to move the score along to 64. Wickets fell quickly for a brief period and Phoenix were soon looking down the barrel at 116/7. Skipper Morris put on another valuable 34 and N Naik chipped in with 40. With balls running out and a couple more wickets gone Naik was last out with an over left and Phoenix were 18 runs short. Phoenix return to the Park this week to battle Longford and are keen to get back to their winning ways.
