4) Stupid tasks and hazing teach discipline and keep standards high. Very few civilians under the age of 50 have ever had to shine boots. Or wax and buff a floor. Or clean the hell out of a room until the fumes from cleaning supplies make you want to pass out. These are basically acceptable tasks early in an enlistment - they serve a purpose, from attention to detail to practicing collective responsibility. You can easily take things too far, though. Many of us have done things as stupid as sweeping dirt on top of dirt. Yes, you read that right - sweeping dirt from one end of a field to the other. A dirt field. There are countless examples of time-wasting, asinine, and even dangerous tasks that are performed under the guise of training. The reality, though, is high standards and discipline are realized when people work really hard over time. Hazing is the shortcut used by young, lazy leaders.
