Espinal tells me his version of what happened earlier today: “We were down south, where all the bad guys usually are. We were taking contact and I was shooting back at them. It was a lot of fun. On the way back the vic just blew up. I was really shaken up, didn’t know what was going on. The EOD told us there is a secondary #IED behind the vehicle, so I was twice as scared. When we got out of the vehicle we started taking fire. I just went behind a compound. We took cover and tried to find out where the bad guys were so we could return some fire at them.” - I notice that Espinal talks a bit slower than a few days ago when I talked with him while he was cleaning his rifle just before the operation. “I could have died,” says Espinal. “But I am still alive and happy as ever. I was expecting to go out and have some fun because we were planning an attack.
