40 years ago this week McDonalds opened its very first takeaway in the UK in Powis Street, Woolwich Arsenal town centre. McDonalds actually started quite slowly in the UK which worried their management. Comedian and then Blackheath-based Simon Day worked at McDonalds in Woolwich when it opened and remembers going home right on the dot when his shift ended, as almost all working people did in the 1970s. But management, over from the USA, was unimpressed with his attitude and suggested he hang around a little longer, like everyone else. Simon was soon seeking pastures new.
