49th Constitution Day celebration, Wellington Cook Islands High Commissioner Tekaotiki Matapo was a proud host of this morning’s Constitution Reception for members of the diplomatic corp, New Zealand Government, business, academia, tangata whenua and society as well as representatives of the Cook Islands Community at Te Wharewaka Reception Venue along the Wellington Waterfront. The blistery overcast Wellington morning could not overshadow what was a joyous occasion as High Commissioner Matapo spoke of New Zealand as a ‘home away from home’ for the 60,000 Cook Islanders that now reside in New Zealand in commemorating the 49th year of Cook Islands self-government in free association with New Zealand. In addressing the gathering, Matapo spoke of the Cook Islands strong historical and people to people ties with New Zealand and the need for ongoing dialogue based on an enduring partnership of equality and mutual respect as both countries continued to evolve. The Hon Paul Foster-Bell spoke on behalf of the New Zealand Government.
