4th paragraph of American Values subject in adopted platform: “College costs and student loan debt are issues that must be prioritized, particularly for working families who make enough to be disqualified from government grants, but not enough to afford rising tuition. This debt inhibits graduates from achieving full independence, starting households, home ownership, entrepreneurship, and investing for retirement. Furthermore, those who are held back by too much debt early in their professional career may never be able to reach their potential. We encourage efforts to give students more information on the costs and benefits of their student loans, so they can assess if their total debt at graduation can be paid back through their expected annual salary. We also support a market-based student loan solution that gets politicians out of the business of setting interest rates by pegging rates to the market rate yield on the 10-year Treasury note.
