#5 Fantasy/Sci-fi - Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch I am a huge fan of the Fantasy genre so I was at a loss to pick the best book to read. I did not want to go back to the safe picks (Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, George RR Martin and the likes). It is after all a challenge: to pick up a book I would otherwise not read. I was recommended The Lies of Locke Lamora. I have to admit, I was skeptical about the book. I was tired of the usual run of the mill Fantasy books. I wanted something with a real kick to it (something like Game of Thrones... yes KILL EM ALL!!!) The book began at best mediocre in my opinion. I liked the writing style, there was a certain flair to it. Not mind-blowing, but pleasant to read. I hated the way some of the characters spoke, but I guessed that just proved how well the author made the characters come to life through speech and action. I was slightly irritated by how the author broke the fourth wall at times with quotes from other writers. I understood his intention. He meant to give us an inkling of what was to come, but I disliked being torn out of my fantasy reverie. Personal pet peeve. Though I was not initially impressed with the story setting (a Venice like world with mafia from the Godfather), I learned to appreciate how beautiful this make-belief world was. Boy, the author could describe your ears off. He made the world very real, from its architecture to the fashion to the food (oh boy the FOOD had paragraphs of description dedicated to it and as a foodie, I heartily approve) absolutely breath-taking. Enough with the authors writing style, how about the story? You know a book is good when it leaves you reeling with shock. I have gasped aloud a total of four times, re-read various pages several times in disbelief, and grabbed my partners arm screaming How- Wha- No- But WHY!? I found myself emotional because of what happened to the characters, and I knew I was done. I was sucked in. I CARED about what happened to the characters. The book had me. I want to jump into the second and third book right now, but I think I shall bear the urge for a little more. I have 12 other books to go and some of them have words like history and politics in their genre description. God help me. I really recommend this book. If you are a Fantasy lover, doubly so.
