5 November, 2014 (Psalm 38) A most appropriate Psalm for those who face opposition and are tempted to return hostility in kind. Would that we more often behaved ‘like a deaf man…like a mute man who does not open his mouth’. Jeremiah 7.1-29: a frightening text, this, for those who think they can live a double life. God says, ‘you cannot stand before me…and say, “we are delivered!” – only to go on doing all these abominations’! Matthew 23.1-12: Jesus is so emphatic about his rejection of the Scribes and Pharisees that He uses the hyperbole ‘call no man father… you are not to be called rabbi’ as if to say that those using those terms have forfeited them by their hypocrisy. Prayer: Gracious Father, You have given this forgiven sinner the privilege of being trusted by people. Help me continue to remain worthy of being called, Husband, Son, Pastor, Teacher, and Father, by the protection of Your holy angel over my life, that the evil foe, who would rob me of my reputation, may have no power over me. I humbly ask this, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
