5 Things to Look For When Hiring A Personal Trainer 1. Education – All trainers should hold, at the very minimum, a Personal Training Certification that is Third Party Accredited. I personally feel a trainer should also have some type of back ground in exercise science. Don’t be afraid to ask to see your trainer’s certification and what type of education background they have. Someone who went through 4 years of Exercise Physiology is going to be much more in tune with your fitness needs compared to someone who is a Political Science major with a Certification. 2. Experience- Your trainer should have some type of experience working one-on-one with clients, be it a gym setting or in home training. The phrase “I have helped my friends and family get in shape” and “I train myself” isn’t going to cut it. Just because a trainer knows what works well for them, does not mean they know what will work well for you. If they haven’t had actual paying customers, you might want to look into why. If they DO have experience, ask for client testimonials or permission to talk with one of their clients about their training experience with them. A trainer will toot their own horn all day, but the real scoop comes from their clients. 3. Commitment to Fitness – Your trainer should be committed to their own fitness. Who the hell wants to be told they need to drop 10% body fat when their trainer could be considered overweight or obese?! Your trainer should practice what they preach and look the part (without being so into themselves that they can’t take their eyes off their own muscles during their training sessions with you…you know the type of trainer I am talking about here). 4. Attitude/Training Personality – You not only want someone who is going to push you to reach your fitness goals, but you have to mesh well with your trainer. Go with your gut. If you get a shady vibe or don’t feel like you can have an open line of communication with your trainer, run for the hills. There are all types of training personalities out there. Decide if you want a Jillian Michaels wanna be or someone with a softer push. 5.Honesty – You are paying this person to kick your butt into shape, so you shouldn’t get offended or upset when they give you some tough love. Remember, you represent your trainer, so if you aren’t seeing the results from working with them, it is ultimately going to reflect poorly on the trainer and their reputation. A trainer who gives you constructive criticism when you need to work harder and positive feedback when you are doing an awesome job is an honest trainer. Don’t expect your trainer to kiss your butt and tell you that you are doing an awesome job when you are eating a plate full of donuts. Sign up to work with Complete Physique today to gain access to an educated trainer, with over 13 years of personal training experience, who is committed fitness (AND clean eating), has a positive push approach to training and is honest. completephysiqueusa/contact/
