5 Tips For Apartment Gardening April 9, 2014 by Amy Leave a Comment One of the best things about gardening is the fact that it can be done indoors as well as outdoors and doesn’t always require a large open space. The beauty of having indoor gardens lies with the variety of plants and their flexibility for growth in different environments, regardless of how little space an apartment may have. Whether a beginner or expert gardener, just keeping a few simple steps in mind will help you have a fun and rewarding experience creating a thriving garden and inviting apartment atmosphere. Start Simple For those who are new to gardening and may be a little intimidated with immense amount of plant choices, one of the most important things to remember is to start off simple. Some of the easiest indoor gardening plants are actually herbs. There is a large variety of herbs that are very common for cooking that grow well indoors. They are convenient in the fact that they only require small separate containers and just and adequate amount of light from a window. Some of the most popular and common cooking herbs that beginner gardeners choose are basil, rosemary, mint, parsley, chives, sage and thyme. Choose the Right Container Each plant requires a certain amount of depth and width needed for proper growth, which is why choosing the best containers is quite important. For most herbs, containers do not have to be more than 12 inches in diameter, while something larger like a tomato plant would require approximately 22 inches in diameter. While the tomato plant container may seem large, it normally fits perfectly on a balcony, roof top space or sunny corner in an apartment and will provide several rounds of fresh juicy tomatoes. Grow a Few Things Together If a small space is keeping you from growing a number of different herbs or vegetables, try planting a few things together in one container. This is a great way to have a variety of plants for selection or just visual interest. One of the most important points to remember is to choose plants that require similar amounts of light, moisture and space. One of the best combinations is planting a tomato plant with basil around it or even basil with green onion. This method is perfect for having everything you need for simple fresh dishes like a tomato basil salad. Window Gardening One of the best ways to create a healthy mini apartment garden is by having small containers secured to a window sill or even a strung up as a vertical garden. This method maximizes the use of all the space available, but also provides ample natural light for plants that require it the most. Window gardens are perfect in areas where more privacy is needed and also create a natural block as opposed to curtains or blinds. Hydroponic Gardening Among the biggest indoor gardening trends to-date are hydroponic gardens. They are a wonderful way to grow herbs and vegetables without the use of soil. Since the soil is kept out of the growing process, the plants are known to have greatly reduced chances of having diseases and infestations. They are also used as a great way to regulate moisture in all living areas. With the great variety of hydroponic containers and kits available, most of them are also used as gardens and beautiful art installations to enhance any décor. -by Amy
