5 things to know on Monday, March 10, 2014 1. Tired? It’s OK, you have an excuse: For those of us waking up in Canada today, it may be a difficult Monday after the clocks moved ahead an hour over the weekend. Although it’s only the loss of 60 minutes, the change can really do a number on our internal clock. Heart attacks tend to dramatically increase the day after -- and drivers, be extra careful -- so does the likelihood of car accidents in the week following the time shift. 2. Mystery surrounding Malaysia plane deepens: Vietnamese ships working throughout the night could not find a rectangular object spotted Sunday afternoon that was thought to be one of the doors of a Malaysia Airlines passenger jet. Investigators continue to pursue “every angle” to pursue its disappearance, including hijacking. ctvnews.ca/world/investigators-chasing-every-angle-on-missing-jet-1.1721681 3. Harper travels to South Korea: Residents in most of Canada may have lost an hour’s sleep over the weekend, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper managed to lose 13, after jetting off to South Korea for a renewed round of free-trade negotiations with the East Asian country. If a deal is inked, it would mark progress toward one of the Conservatives’ long-time goals: developing stronger trade ties with Asia. But not everyone is pleased: Canadian automakers are concerned that a pending free-trade agreement will be disastrous for the industry. ctvnews.ca/politics/harper-heads-to-south-korea-to-ink-long-awaited-free-trade-pact-1.1721053 4. Congratulations to Canada’s Best News Anchor: It was a glitzy night at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards gala in Toronto Sunday, where CTV National News Anchor Lisa LaFlamme was named Best News Anchor. Canadian funnyman Martin Short hosted the star-studded award show, which celebrated excellence in Canadian film and television. Among the winners was ‘Orphan Black’ star Tatiana Maslany, who took home the trophy for best actress in a TV drama. Short didn’t miss an opportunity to poke fun at Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, saying he was particularly glad to be back in Toronto “since you legalized crack.” ctvnews.ca/entertainment/lisa-laflamme-named-best-news-anchor-national-at-canadian-screen-awards-1.1721494 5. Lev Tahor members back on Canadian soil: The case of an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect took more twists and turns over the weekend, when members of Lev Tahor were sent back home to Canada after being stopped by authorities on their way to Guatemala. Two families, whose children were ordered removed by an Ontario court, were flying to Guatemala. However, nine members of the sect were sent back to Canada by authorities after a stopover in Trinidad and Tobago. Police confirmed Saturday that the group had landed in Toronto, and the six children were placed in the care of the Children’s Aid Society. Then on Sunday, two members of the sect were apprehended at the Calgary airport by police working in conjunction with Ontario’s children’s services. ctvnews.ca/canada/two-lev-tahor-members-apprehended-in-calgary-1.1720972
