6/13 Friday the 13th Chicken Spring Lake!! mile 751 I sleep cold and wake up cold, were over 10,000 feet. Im just a bit worried about being warm enough with what I have. Any time I have snow camped I have had more gear with me. I guess Im going to have to start putting my tent up for extra warmth at this elevation. My legs feel good today, Im moving with ease, I stop because I know that I should instead of stopping because I feel like I have to or Ill fall over. Im excited it get to chicken spring lake to spend the afternoon. The views keep me entertained, chipmunks scurry about the woods, everything is still. I climbed on top of some big rocks to warm in the sun. I look down on the beautiful meadows I just hiked from and to stare out of the mountains and their bits of snow that fight the sun. They remind me of the bits of snow that survive on the mountains at the end of the summer. I think of making the drive from Anchorage to Cooper Landing thought the summer and how all summer long the mountains are changing. Loosing snow, more green, different flowers, but still after all the summer sun some bits of snow survive. Chicken Spring Lake is perfect. We are for sure, now in the High Sierras. We bask in the sun wearing our puffy jackets at our own personal alpine beach. The scene feels as if we should be in a patagonia magazine or a clip from national geographic 101 most beautiful places to visit. Especially with the 5 house packers trotting by above us on the ridge. The sun is hot, the water and air chilled. Again I think of Alaska and all of the picture perfect lakes that we have made our homes and plunged ourselves into. I wasnt going to get in the water here but with this thought in mind I couldnt not bring myself to get in. Joey, Kevin and Trina you would all be proud. Squeekers, Worm and I are all now members of the Chicken Spring Lake Swim Team!!! It seems sinful that so many hikers walk right on by this gem. seems like a sin if you ask me. 8 more miles into our camp for the night. We stop for a sunset dinner and freeze our buts off. All 3 of us chattering and fumbling with our cold fingers to pack up and get back on the trail, moving to get warm. Its for sure a tent night tonight, Im not happy about it but Ill be happy when Im warm! We make a fort of logs over our bear canisters and cash in under the stars to rest for 2 big climbing days to come, Mt. Whitney at 14,505 the highest peek in the lower 48 and Forester Pass 13,098 the highest point on the PCT.
