6th China-Arab States Cooperation Forum to begin This year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. The 6th ministerial level talks of the organization will be held in Beijing on June 5. The summit is eagerly anticipated and China has vowed to continue to strengthen cooperation, share opportunities, and face up to challenges with Arab countries. In an article in the People’s Daily, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that the forum has become an important “brand” for promoting China–Arab relations, which are based on strong communication and cooperation mechanisms in various fields. According to the foreign minister, China has become the second largest trading partner of Arab states. In the past decade, bilateral trade volume has surged from about US$25 billion to nearly US$240 billion. Wang also added that the Arab countries are China’s most important energy providers, and that both sides share interests in finance, aerospace and new energy. Cultural exchange, too, has been on the rise. The two sides have boosted mutual cooperation through tourism, people-to-people exchanges and education. According to Wang, there are now more than 20 universities in China that have Arabic-related majors and there are more than 10,000 Arab students in the country.
