7 drunk drivers arrested From Cook Islands News Tuesday September 16, 2014 Written by Matariki Wilson Published in Crime Police arrested seven motorists at the weekend for drink driving offences and 13 other motorists were forbidden from driving for 24 hours. This high number of arrests and warnings were a result of a stepped up road safety campaign by local police who say it’s evident that motorists are blatantly ignoring the ‘no drink driving’ law. 10 of the 13 drivers that were forbidden to drive were stopped within a one and a half hour window in the early hours of Sunday. All seven motorists arrested at the weekend will appear in court this Thursday while those that were forbidden to drive have recovered their vehicles and hopefully the long walk home after having their vehicles removed have drummed home the important road safety message. Inspector John Hosking of the Cook Islands police is appealing to the community to take care of each other when deciding to have a party or head to town clubbing. “Friends and family need to look after each other,” says Hosking. “Stop a friend or family member from driving if they have been drinking, organise a sober driver to safely drive you around and plan for a safe social event.” Police will continue its high visibility road safety campaign and once again urge the public to work together to prevent deaths on Rarotonga roads. - Matariki Wilson
