The method works well and makes possible many future missions which might otherwise have been abandoned. For the day, two B-17s are lost, with 10 men listed as missing. During the night, 791 RAF aircraft make the first raid of the Battle of Hamburg, aka Operation Gomorrah, losing 12 aircraft and crews. Window was used for the first time.
