70 years ago this month the Allies invaded Normandy. There is a tendency to think D-Day, then somehow we have the Battle of the Bulge, then were in Bavaria. Not so. There is also the feeling that we waited until the last minute to get in on the kill--Also not so. When we went ashore on six June, the Germans were in what is now Belarus and the Eastern Ukraine. For the months of June and July, the Germans lost about 1000 per division per month in the east, and the Russians ,much less than 1500 men per month per division--including during Operation Bagration. In Normandy for the same time, it was 2300 per division/month for the Germans, and 2000 for the allies--An appalling rate of loss. German division were expected to be used up in about 3 weeks on the Normandy campaign.
