7411 Private Wilfred Cliffe 2nd Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment Wilfred Cliffe was a reservist from Norton Canes. He was a married man with a young child and had previously served with the 2nd Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment. On being discharged, he had returned to his home village and worked as a miner at the Conduit Colliery. He had also enlisted in the Territorial Force, serving with “F” Company of the 5th South Staffords at Hednesford. He was mobilised on the outbreak of the war and rejoined the 2nd Battalion at Aldershot before arriving in France on 14 August 1914. Private Cliffe was wounded near Moussy and was evacuated to a Casualty Clearing Station, where he succumbed to his injuries on 16 September 1914. He is now buried at Vailly British Cemetery: Plot I, Row D, Grave 29. He is also commemorated by the War Memorial Window and on the brass memorial to former pupils of Norton Canes School, which are located in the parish church of St James the Great in the village.
