75 Years Ago Today: Judy singed a new one-year contract with Decca Records. As she was only seventeen and still considered a minor, the contract is signed by her mother and reads Judy Garland by Ethel M. Garland. The contract called for twelve songs to be recorded within the year. Judy would be given a royalty advance fee of $250.00 for each completed song. She ended up recording sixteen singles during this twelve month period. The royalties Judy received were set up as follows: On singles with a Garland song on both sides of the record, she would get two cents for each record sold in the U.S. and Canada, and 10 percent of the wholesale price in other countries; On singles with just one Garland song on one side of the record, she would get one cent per disc sold in the U.S. and Canada. Judy would also be paid 50 percent of whatever Decca would be paid for public performances or broadcasting. Regarding the songs to be performed, the contract states: The Artist agrees to record such selections as Decca may choose within the Artists repertoire. The first song that Judy would record under this new contract would be her first ever studio recording (not counting the MGM pre-recording which was not recorded for sale on records) of Over the Rainbow on July 28, 1939. #judygarland #deccarecords #overthrainbow thejudyroom/decca/recordingslist.html
