8-13-1964, The Bolivar Breeze top story - Coach Dunning talks about his key players for the coming varsity season (and 88 high-schoolers signed up for the program) in this page one story: BOLIVAR CENTRAL LOOKS LIKE 64 FOOTBALL POWERHOUSE Bolivar Central Football Coach Dutch Dunning has been looking forward to the 1964 season for the past few years. This is the year that Dutch feels will re-establish BCS as one of the high school football powerhouses. One of the reasons why Dutch is anxious for the football season to start is the added experience gained last year by six foot, 185 pound Doug Reeland and 6-1, 210 pound Bob Richardson, better known to his teammates as Moose. Dunning remarked, If we get mileage out of Reeland and Richardson, this could be another year for us. Doug and Moose are certain to make up one half of Bolivars offensive backfield. Theres also Brian Jordan back in his third year as a regular quarterback, and he handles himself in such a manner that Dunning has plans to split the signal-calling chores. That is, Dunning will permit Jordan to automatic if he desires, after the play has been called in the huddle. Dunning is one of the coaches who sends in each play from the sidelines. Hes a brain in the classroom as well as on the field. Dunning explained. Hes the only quarterback Ive had I can completely trust. Ill give him the leeway of automatically changing the play at the scrimmage. Dunning is looking toward his sixth season as Bolivars head coach in the manner of a rookie mentor sensing a big year. I think well really come into our own, he noted, discussing the prospects. We will have depth and we have 23 seniors who have seen plenty of action in their first three years. Theyll be fighting for positions and that means plenty of competition for the positions. You can only play 11 at a time and when you have Reeland, a junior, in there, well it cuts down on the odds. And it makes for mighty fierce competition. Bolivar has been regarded as a town with a football tradition. Well have 88 out for football, Dunning said, talking about the spirit of Bolivar football. Thats 88 of 103 boys enrolled in high school and thats pretty good turnout, wouldnt you say? We wont cut anyone. Even if a boy doesnt see a minute of action in a varsity, jayvee or frosh game, hell have 10 weeks of push-ups, exercises and the like. Thats a physical fitness program and it wont hurt the boy. Besides the two R pulverizers - Reeland and Richardson - and Jordan, back from last years team are Steve Day, a 155 pound senior halfback, and Gary Butler, 160 pound senior guard.
