8/8/2013 7:32:00 AM Town Benefit Day hopes to raise $25K Kimberly Petalas News Staff Writer WESTMINSTER — With a goal of raising $25,000, the Westminster Neighbors Helping Neighbors board members are preparing for their 26th annual Town Benefit Day on Aug. 11. Neighbors Helping Neighbors is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization with a six-member board — made up of Tammy Dwelly, Sam Albert, Laura Delorey, Jim Delisle, Bob Cudak and Nancy Green — that sorts through all the requests for assistance from the program. Working with many volunteers from town, the board is able to organize Town Benefit Day to raise money to help those in need each year. The board works directly with families who seek assistance during times of crisis. During its existence, the organization has helped more than 125 families and provided more than $300,000 in assistance. At the benefit, Wachusett Animal Hospital will be hosting a “Cutest Pet Photo Contest” during which people will be able to enter their own pets and vote for their favorite at the event. To enter, send a photo and a $5 entry fee to Wachusett Animal Hospital, 29 Theodore Drive, Westminster MA 01473. Contestants can also enter the day of the event for a $10 entry fee. There will also be a farmers market featuring vegetables, fruits, plants and flowers. A “memory tent” will also be set up, which will feature photos from the Town Benefit Day dating back to the first ever event 26 years ago. There will also be a bake sale and a tea room where baked goods, iced coffee and iced tea can be purchased. In addition, there will be a benefit boutique, chair massages, nail designs, raffles, a Chinese auction. There will also be a K-9 demonstration at noon. For children, there will be a flea market, games, a petting zoo, pony rides and inflatable toys. The Worcester Sharks mascot, Finz, will also be on hand from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. In addition, well-known members of the community —including Selectman Heather Billings — will be taking a seat in the dunk tank throughout the day. There will be live entertainment all day from Pete Farrell, Dave Baldini, Vinnie Jamieson and Bob Schuchard, Cara Keane and Valerie Newman, and James Clune. Food will be available throughout the day including Westminster-owned Buck’s Roadside BBQ, Chief Cudak’s Kapusta, and Benefit Day’s famous fried dough. Town Benefit Day will take place on Sunday, Aug. 11 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Academy Hill. The event is held rain or shine. Admission is free and the event is handicap accessible.
