8 August 1914: In Alsace and under pressure from higher HQs, General Bonneau orders his VII Corps to attack Mulhouse. It turns out they take it w/o a shot being fire because the Germans had already left the city. In Dar es Salaam, German East Africa (Tanzania) the British crusier lobs a few shells at the city from the cruiser, Astraea. The sides end up negotating that the British would not attack the city & return the citys inhabitants would remain peaceable throughout the war. Of course, their two governments refuse to recognize the deal. The German East African governor wants to maintain peace at any cost & this upsets the German commander, LTC Paul Emil von lettow-Vorbeck who immediately takes his troops inland to Pegu to prepare for war. In Lodon, Field Marshall Sir Herbert Kitchener calls for 100,000 volunteers to join the British Army. 175,000 voluntter over the next week.
