In this talk, I will discuss the work of two artistic collaboratives, KUNSTrePUBLIK Berlin and UPSTART, based in Dublin, to consider how their projects imagine alternative understandings of land use, urbanity and public space through socially-engaged and place-based creative processes. Rather than treat space as an empty container to be filled in or emptied out, these artistic collaboratives begin with an understanding of the city as constituted by inhabited places that intersect with other complex places and nonhuman lives. Their artistic matter mobilizes the stray stuff, remnants, leftovers, unwanted forms, and seemingly empty lots of the city (including the “death strips”), to create what I call “interim spaces” through which non-normative, critical spatial and historical imaginaries of the city can be explored. Rather than “temporary land uses” only, I argue that their work invites encounters with the city as an enacted environment and asks visitors and locals to take notice of the complex ways places are made and remade. Such an understanding of the interim also is intended of a criticism of scholarly interpretations about such projects as “creatives” or “urban pioneers” working temporarily in “shrinking cities”. wageningenur.nl/geo/till Following speakers during the 2013-2014 series are Noel Salazar (Leuven), Mike Crang (Durham), Kevin Hannam (Leeds Metropolitan) and Hayden Lorimer (Glasgow).
