8 years ago, I was chatting with someone at Copa who turned out to be a JdM journo about a bike Id just bought for a friend that happened to have been stolen a few months prior. Its owner spotted my friend riding it and bought it right back from him. The journalist said she wouldnt use my name but did. That led to Benoît (if youre an old school Club Social patron, youll know who he is: drove a multicolour Toyota Corolla station wagon, always with a bunch of bikes piled up inside and strapped to the roof) confronting me about ratting him out to the press and to him warning me to watch myself. Some of you probably bought bikes from him too. His sales method was to leave them parked up to parking meters in busy areas with a price and a phone number. Of course by now we all know that is probably a sign the ride was lifted, but I dunno, in 2006, I was a little greener. Recently, not a day goes by without me seeing him walking around with 1 or 2 bicycles, always different models, from my own street to ave Mt Royal, boul Rosemont and everywhere in between. He remembers me. I dont know what to say when I see him. Do I ask him where he found those bicycles? Do I let him do his thing? Hes just surviving, but Ive gotten 4 bikes stolen in the past decade and Im unsure of how to confront someone who is actively part of the thieving cycle. And Im watching myself still. I feel like Im doing it again, ratting him out. But yeah, get a good lock, dont just lean it up against the fence for 20 minutes. This guy is getting around.
