01. SUMMARY: On 24 April 2013, an eight-storied commercial building, Rana Plaza, collapsed in Savar, a sub-district in the Greater Dhaka Area, the capital of Bangladesh. Approximately 2,500 people were injured. At least 2,500 people were rescued from the building alive. The search for the dead ended on 13 May with the death toll of 1,127.,dead body found-1115 ,Dead in hospital-12 Traceless dead body-61, Injured and rescued-2438. The location of Rana Plaza is within 1 kilometer from the YWCA of Savar. Many of the victims from that incident are from the same working areas where YWCA is extending its development support i.e. health, micro-finance etc. Some of the members from YWCA savings group have lost their family members and near ones in this incident. YWCA is providing services to the poor people at community level in response to the need of its target groups. In this situation we also feel the urge to stand beside the victims and do something for the affected people and bereaved families. In this reagrd, YWCA conducted a survey in its working areas which included 10 wards/villages . A total number of 103 families were found affected. Among them 40 found dead, traceless 24 and 39 severely injured. All of them are the main income earner of their family. Those who lost family members are in severe distress. Besides, people who got wounded will take quite some time to back in normal health and find a regular job. Based on the above information, YWCA has come up with a proposal for financial support among the worst suffering community people in Savar. Our locally contribution was BDT 474,510 and donors’ contribution BDT 963,125 for financial support among the worst suffering community people in Savar. 02. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: To appropriately address the needs of the people who were affected by the building collapse and provide financial assistance to 103 families in our working areas. 03. SELECTION OF TARGET FAMILIES: The selection of beneficiaries was preliminary done by the Field Organizers and Supervisors by means of survey, which was then verified by General Secretary. Through this process, the neediest families were identified and a total number of 103 families were found affected. Especially the poor women, children, older people were selected. Among them 3 persons from our beneficiaries family No. of dead 40, Traceless 24 and 39 is injured in hand, legs and head. Some of them are the only earring member of their family, some of them take long time to recover from trauma. Many of them lost their job permanently. They are living hand to mouth. So they need more money for treatment and family expenses. 04. ACCOMPLISHMENT: 1st Phase: Immediately after the incident the local staff members and many of the YWCA members rushed to the place. They assisted the rescue work by providing water, nursing the wounded providing food etc. Many of them cooked food in their hope with own and collective initiative and distributed them to the relatives of the victims who came there to look for their near ones. They collected old clothes which were needed to warp the dead bodies, besides many of the victims’ relatives needed clothes as they ran to the place from different parts of the country in empty hand. The youth members assisted Red Crescent and other INGOs in distributing their assistance properly and also to collect blood, medicines etc. 2nd Phase : In the second phase of support YWCA extended financial support on 13 June, 2013 to 91 families in 10 wards of Savar Upozilla. After discussion with the local authority, other organizations and analyzing the situation of the victims and their families YWCA decided to extend financial support to the victims. It seemed that many are providing medical assistance, rice etc but not much has been done to support the families so that that they can start a new living through a small business as most of them have become jobless or does not have adequate physical and mental strength to go back to similar jobs again. Many were found with deep psychological trauma that they even don’t want to enter a break building thinking that it will collapse on them. Therefore they needed some capital support so that they can do something to earn a living. Through a survey we only selected the neediest families in the working areas. Number and types of assistance: Sl. Types of victim. Number. Total Amount (1BDT=ca 8,5 øre) 1. YWCA staff. 1. 30,000 1. Beneficiary. 4. 80,000 (20000 X 4 ) 2. Dead. 36. 540,000 (15000 X 4 ) 3. YWCA has also visited few hospitals where still many victims are understatement. Some assistance will be provided to selected patients who are in deep distress and helpless. YWCA is also exploring possibilities of starting a free school for the young children (under five) of the local community people who works in the garments and the victims of the Rana Plaza incident. Initially the school will house around 30 students and gradually reach to 100 students. If this special fund is left with some balance it will be utilized as a starting capital for this initiative. 05 .METHOD OF DISTRIBUTION: Distribution of support was done by the local staff with supervision from senior staff from National and Dhaka YWCA . During the distributions Local Board members, National President , Church Leader and staffs were present. Each recipient signed or put their thumb impression on the muster roll as a proof of receiving the money. Each of the recipent was given a ID card to ensure distribution to the right person. (One day before the distribution, assigned staff went to the victims’ house and distributed a token to each deserving recipient and asked them or her to come to the distribution spot on the distribution day at a specified time. As they reported to the distribution spot accordingly and presented their token, they were handed over the money. In this way, it was possible to avoid large crowds and all the distributions went smoothly with minimum level of chaos. ) 06.OUTCOME : The amount distributed by YWCA is adequate enough to buy a sewing machine, a rickshaw van or to strat a tea stall, or to meet some of the medical expenses, which gave a hope to the victim families The beneficiaries of the target areas expressed their gratitude to the concerned staff of YWCA for standing beside them during their emergency need. This emergency financial assistance increased the acceptance of YWCA among the community people of the target areas significantly. 07.THINGS LEARNED: It was encouraging to find that our staffs were ready to take extra load to help people in times in their suffering without complaints. Selection was good and the really needy people shed tears with joy after getting the assistance and it gave the YWCA staff great joy and satisfaction. 08. CONCLUSION YWCA as a humanitarian organization always tries to be beside people in sufferings. We thank all our partners for their tireless support in our efforts. To have such partners and friends is a blessing from Gob. We also thank God almighty to show us the way of helping each other. We hope our little support will be able to bring changes in the lives of the victims and they will be able to accept the challenges of life courageously. From YWCA of Bangladesh
