9/11 has morphed into a couple of things for me and my little family. I reflect on having kids. Way back when Drew and I were idealistic babies we said cute things like Why would we bring kids into this cruel world? We came to realize that the way to counter cruel is with copious amounts of love and understanding. Its sometimes a struggle to remember that but anything worth having is hard sometimes, yes? I also remember and pass that memory of 9/11 on to my kids so they can better understand how precious life is, thus perpetuating the cycle of love. We talk about the lives lost, about the first responders, about the motivations for the perpetrators and discuss how to not let thus happen again. Our family talks are caked in honesty and a hearty attempt to help them try to understand as best as their still - maturing brains can understand. Our daily talks and lessons to our boys can be summarized simply: Life is hard, its not fair, its unpredictable, its lovely, its fragile, its so worth it! Go make the best life for you, it will help honor those who cant live anymore.
