9-11a Outer Stability, Inner Space As we begin our asana - TopicsExpress

9-11a Outer Stability, Inner Space As we begin our asana practice, stability (sthirata) is of paramount importance to the yoga practitioner. As the physical embodiment is stabilized, the fluctuations and oscillations of body and mind are reduced, and we develop the capacity to penetrate inward toward the vast, quiet space within. In this class, we will explore the balance of effort and sensitivity that make this inner penetration possible, so that we come to experience our embodiment as “space in a place.” 12-2:30p Like A Pot In The Ocean Empty within, empty without, empty like a pot in space. Full within, full without, full like the pot in the ocean. Hatha Yoga Pradipika IV.56. When we practice pranayama with sensitivity and an awareness of the vast inner space of our embodiment, a shift in our relationship to the breath can happen. The mind of the ego is pacified, and we begin to have the feeling that the “I” is not breathing but rather “is breathed.” Though this state ultimately occurs through a combination of sustained practice and grace, we will explore the conditions in our practice of supine and seated pranayama that can help this state of “empty fullness to arise. This class will include a half hour discussion of relevant yoga philosophy. Please bring a copy of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali if you have one. portlandyoga/workshops/4571985498
