9/12/2013, The Tipsy Butler, Damariscotta, ME. (A Most Excellent B&B, by the way.) On the way: Tractor-trailer rig on I-84, it’s box trailer leaning precariously to the right, I estimate as much as 10 degrees. One sharp curve to the left, and that rig is taking a nap. On the Interstate, saw a straight cargo truck labeled “Katsiroubas Bros. Wholesale Fruit and Produce | Boston, MA.” We decided that “Katsiroubas” would be a wonderful expletive. Hammer strikes thumb: “Katsiroubas, that hurts!” Starting at about Portsmouth, NH, terrific thunderstorm, tapering to a gentle rain for the remainer of the trip. Here in Damarascotta, rain and near continuous thunder continues as a cold front bulls its way in from the northwest into unseasonably hot and humid air…the temps around here have hovered around 90 for some days, with high humidity. A/C is relatively rare in homes here. Must be pretty miserable. Flood watch has been issued, and strong thunderstorms threaten until around 10 p.m. Ah, it’s raining and the traffic sucks. We must be in Maine. Dinner last night at Rein’s Deli in Vernon, CT, where we spent the night. An annual favorite: dinner and breakfast at Rein’s. Dinner was a “fresser” (large) pastrami reuben. I’m not even going to discuss dessert. In the morning as we got ready to leave for breakfast, Housekeeping knocked on the door and asked if they could come in to inspect the room. They said they had a dog. Um, what are you looking for, I said, memories from the 60s boiling up. “Bedbugs,” she said. “We inspect regularly.” Well, that’s a first. I’ve heard of the practice, so I opened the door to meet George the Beagle, who did not pause to give us any guitar riffs, but got right to work, sniffing everything in the room. His handler, an attractive young woman whose name I didn’t get (yes, I’m THAT old) said George is famous, because he’s been on the Howard Stern Show and had a couple more TV appearances. I tried to commune with George, but he was all business. After they left the room, I realized that Sue was in her nightgown and I was wearing a pair of Gold’s Gym sweatpants and no shirt. Not a good look for me, take my word for it.
