9/14/14 The Benefits of Salvation by Faith: Part One ~ Romans 5:1-5 by Dr Joe K Taylor, Senior Pastor, South Reno Baptist Church REVIEW: A. Biblical faith does not look at the limitations/circumstances; it does not have a lowered expectation about God; it always gives God alone the glory; and has an unwavering dependence upon God. B. We are saved by the grace of God, through our faith in God—not because of our works for God. C. “By faith”—It’s how we are saved in the OT, the NT and it’s how we are saved today. In fact, we live our lives “by faith” in Christ alone. ~ Paul lists Five Benefits of our Salvation Here are the first four…. 1. The believer has peace __WITH___ God. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 5:1, HCSB - 1 Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith [ie., we have been saved], we have peace [not simply the emotion/feeling of peace but the lack of war; “peace” refers to our no longer being subject to God’s wrath because of our sin] with God [how?] through our Lord Jesus Christ. Isaiah 26:3, NKJV - 3 You will keep him in perfect peace, [probably the best word in our language to communicate biblical peace is “relief”] Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You. Philippians 4:7, NIV84 - 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 2. The believer has access __TO__ God. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 5:2, HCSB - 2 We have also obtained access through Him by faith into this grace [meaning “favor” or “gift”; it’s getting what you don’t deserve] in which we stand [a ceremonial event when someone is introduced and then stands in the presence of a king], and we rejoice in the hope [Paul uses the word ‘hope’ more in this chapter than in any other chapter in the entire Bible; it means “a settled confidence” or “an assurance” or “an absolute expectation of a guaranteed good-that-is-to-come”] of the glory of God [this “glory” refers to the state of things as God desires, eg., when good triumphs over evil, justice prevails, sin has no place, and everything exists in harmony with His holy character]. [To the Jews] Luke 23:45, NIV84 - 45 …And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. [To the Gentiles] Ephesians 2:14, NIV84 - 14 For he himself is our peace, who…has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility… 3. The believer has help __FROM__ God. VERSE STUDY SECTION - Romans 5:3–4, HCSB - 3 And not only that, but we also rejoice [lit., “boast” of God’s activity] in our afflictions [lit., “tribulation”, (Gk: thlipsis, meaning “crushings”; from the Latin “tribulum”—a heavy timber with spikes in it, used for threshing grain in biblical days. The tribulum was drawn over the grain and it separated the wheat from the chaff. The Hebrew word for “tribulation” describes the process of crushing olives with heavy rocks in order to extract oil], because we know [ie., we’ve experienced] that affliction produces endurance, 4 endurance [lit., triumphant fortitude] produces proven character, and proven character produces hope [assured expectation—that unshakable and confident trust in Jesus]. Trials in our lives are the hidden price of spiritual greatness. Many times the blessing of God are poured out from a bitter cup. 4. The believer has hope __IN__ God. STUDY VERSE SECTION - Romans 5:5, HCSB - 5 This hope will not disappoint us, because God’s love [He sacrificed that we would gain] has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to [lit., “in”] us. [Notice: This hope is because His Spirit lives in us!] HERE IS THE POINT ------> These benefits are more than sufficient to give every child of God reason to rejoice in his/her salvation.
