A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE RATANA CHURCH AND FEDERATION 1918 – 1939 – TW Ratana had 20 years to unite the Maori nation under Ihoa, the Treaty would be easy, this proved more difficult and unfulfilled in his time, many Morehu did not believe or accept his new teachings and revelations - he then planted the RITO HOU (1938) and PUANANI (1939)– mustard seed for a future generation. AREPA,OMEKA,PIRIWIRITUA,HAMUERA REO/Brass Bands are named and baptized. 1940 – 45 – NZ is consumed with the Second World War – Many of Ratana Church and Kotahitanga (Federation) administrators leave Ratana Pa, a battle between the Ratana Family, Ngati Apa and the Morehu begins over ownership of the Temple, Manauo, and Ratana Pa Reserve. A huge split amongst the Pou o Te Haahi ensues regarding Mangai and Ihu Karaiti – Many Pou are deregistered by Tokouru Ratana, TW Ratana’s son and second 1945-1950 – Tokouru Ratana passes away, more Morehu leave Ratana Pa as the Ratana Settlement Act is passed in Parliament creating ¼ acre sections for purchase to improve living standards, and the beginning of a new township under the Rangitikei County Council – Matiu Ratana becomes 3rd Tumuaki and passes away after 3 years – Ratana’s original system (Ratana Maori League Council) he set up before passing away is closed down by the Labour Party - The Komiti o Nga Rahui is formed as part of the Ratana Settelment Act, the Temple, Manuao and Ratana Reserve is palced under the Koimiti o nga Rahui to protect for Morehu Interests – Many have left the church and movement and the Temple and Manuao are deteriorating - RATANA TE TUATORU REO IS FORMED 1949-1966 Te Puhi o Aotea becomes the 4th Tumuaki, - A Revival through the Ratana Youth Organization begins, many begin to return back to the church and movement – Ratana Pa is officially a Township under Rangitikei County Council control – 1957 The Ratana Communal Board of Trustees is formed to renovate the deteriorated Manuao and Temple. 1968-1991 – Te Reo Hura becomes the 5th Tumuaki - Theology debate continues between Mangai, Tama, Ihu Karaiti – arguments between Komiti o nga Rahui, Ratana Communal Board and Te Omeka Pa, Ratana Orakeinui Trust over who is the official Morehu Economic Entity – Ratana Youth Organization declines by the late 70’s –The Present Komiti Haahi Matua is formed to reconsolidate the fragmented committees inclufing Komiti Marae and Ratana Maramatanga Sports Club - A National Tour is undertaken to independently fundraise for the Restoration of The Manauo as a fore runner to Te Wananga o Aotearoa – the building is completed 1981, a political split between Labour and Mana Motuhake - the Morehu Education Plan is sidelined. 1983 The Abolution project begins, - Morehu Youth Movement begins-1985 The Temple Renovation Project Begins – The King Movement and Ratana Movement strengthen their links through female leadership – Temple project completed. – Morehu membership increases as the largest indigenous Church in NZ and the 2nd largest National Church to Church of England and Roman Catholic.The first Maori Catholic Bishop attends 25 Hui to make peace - Morehu Education Authority formed but sidelined again. TE REO O NGA TUAHINE AND TE WHAEA O TE KATOA ARE FORMED. 1994 – Raniera Ratana becomes the 6th Tumuaki – He moves to revise the Ratana Church and Kotahitanga constitution against resistance, and attempts to revise the Ratana Orakeinui Trust, Ratana Communal Board, Te Omeka Pa, Komiti o nga Rahui – Theology debate is reignited between Mangai-Tama-Ihu Karaiti – Raniera sides with NZ First as political ally- NZ First wins all 5 Maori seats – Raniera’s reforms are not achieved – More Morehu leave the Church and Movement leaving for overseas in greater numbers. Morehu Education Authority formed but sidelined again. 1998 –2014 Harerangi Meihana – 7th Tumuaki - Many have left the Church and Federation due to frustration and apathy - Morehu numbers decline and more Morehu leave the country for Australia,USA,Europe, Asia- Whetu Tirikate is the last KOATA under Labour to retire - Political split occurs between Harerangis sons, Maori Part and Labour Party - Morehu Education Authority attempted and sidelined again. Church membership declines more - no national or local projects encouraged or initiated - argument between Ratana Communal Board/Ratana Orakeinui/Komiti o Nga Rahui continues with Te Omeka Pa Trust - Arapere Williams (Original Ratana Communal board member) passes away, Te Whakaotinga (Omeka Trust) and Nakata (original Komiti o nga Rahui member) pass away - TE REO O TE MANGAI IS FORMED.
