A COMEBACK FOR MIKE WEIR? . . . It couldn’t have been. Mike Weir contending in a PGA Tour event again? The 609th ranked player in the world? The guy who hasn’t finished in the top 40 this season, and who hasn’t had the sniff of a top 10 in four years? It wasn’t to be Sunday at the Byron Nelson Championship, but a second-place finish must seem a victory to a guy who has been in the wilderness for years. In the end, Weir couldn’t turn back the clock with a victory just days past his 44th birthday. Asked Saturday whether he even remembered how to win – it has been almost seven years, after all – Weir didn’t bristle at the question, knowing full well it was a legitimate query. “Yeah, we’ll find out, it’s a long day tomorrow,” he replied. After a blistering start Sunday, which included almost jarring one on the par-3 second hole, Weir was solid, but his three bogeys on the day forced him to settle for second place behind victor Brendon Todd, who was blemish-free. It marked Todd’s first victory and it would have been Weir’s ninth, and it’s fair to say it might have meant more to the PGA Tour veteran. Todd gets the two-year PGA Tour exemption that Weir so dearly could have used, but his smile as he shook hands with Padraig Harrington on the 18th showed just how much the result meant to the runner-up (and he’ll get a pretty sweet paycheque too at $745,200).
